The Kaimanawa horses, so wild and free,
Are such a beautiful sight to see.
They gallop, play, frolick and fight,
With not a single human in sight.
Then one morning, sometime in May,
A helicopter came to muster them away.
Terrified, the horses turned and fled,
My heart filling with silent dread.
For what seemed like hours, they galloped hard,
Until each was finally in a yard.
As I watched them panic, my eyes filled with tears,
Wondering if anyone else ever cares.
Such beautiful horses, running so free,
Do they really deserve a death penalty?
When the slaughter truck came to take them away,
I knew they'd be dog food by the end of the day.
Before the truck drove out of sight,
A young stallion had his final look at the light.
Lifting his head high and standing tall,
To his homeland he sent a sorrowful call.
The Kaimanawa horses, no longer free,
Made something die inside of me.
